In March 2010, more than 130 million addresses across the nation will receive a census questionnaire. One of the shortest census forms in history, the 2010 Census questionnaire asks 10 questions and takes about 10 minutes to complete. Completing your census questionnaire is easy, important and safe, and your participation is essential to ensuring a brighter tomorrow for our community.
Required once every 10 years by the U.S. Constitution, the census will count every person living in the United States, both citizens and noncitizens. Census data are used to reapportion the U.S. House of Representatives, re-district each state and determine the distribution of the Electoral College. Census data also directly affect how more than $400 billion per year in federal funding is distributed to state, local and tribal governments. Most importantly, census data is critical in determining locations for new hospitals, improving schools, building new roads, expanding public transportation options and creating new maps for emergency responders.

Franklin Square Proposed Cell Tower Hearing

The residents of Franklin Square have been fighting a proposed cell phone
tower at 340 Dogwood Avenue.
We won the initial fight against T-Mobile, but now T Mobile is seeking a
"Variance or Special Exception of the Town of Hempstead Building Zone Ordinance"
There is a hearing on February 3, 2010 at 2pm in the Town Meeting Pavilion,1 Washington Street, Hempstead.Notices were sent to "a few" people in the area, but most people who fought against the cell phone tower, attended the hearings, and testified have not been notified.
The law firm of Amato & Associates sent out a letter to Chairman David Weiss and Board Members of the Town of Hempstead, Board of Appeals, and in that letter it states "this correspndence is being sent to all property owners and occupants entitle to be notified by mail." Apparently, although I live 7 houses away from the proposed site, am not entitled by law to such notice (None of the neighbors on my block received this notice as far as I am aware.)
Please stop by Town Hall on 2/3/10 at 2pm to show your support against this Appeal.

I am pleased to announce that the Department of Health and Human Services released over $45 million in LIHEAP funding for New York State. The Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program, or LIHEAP, provides a vital safety net for our nation’s low-income households. LIHEAP helps low-income families and seniors stay warm in the winter and cool in the summer.
During these difficult economic times this funding will make it easier for states and municipalities, who have seen increased demand for key services such as LIHEAP, increase. It will also make the choice easier for people who need to decide between medicine and paying their heating bills.
However, many families do not qualify for LIHEAP but still struggle with high home heating oil bills. This is why I have introduced the Home Heating Cost Relief Act, which will help middle class families struggling with the high home heating costs.
The Home Heating Cost Relief Act will provide a $1,000 refundable tax credit for individuals, $2,000 for families, to offset the cost of home heating oil, gas, and propane. This is a temporary, two year tax credit that will give middle class families the relief they need while Congress works to implement a long-term energy policy.
The bill will also create a low interest loan program that will provide up to $5,000, at 1 percent interest, to be used for weatherization. Many homes, particularly older homes, need new windows, new burners, and better insulation in order to be more energy efficient. The loan program will offer many homeowners the opportunity to make necessary home improvements in order to drive down their energy costs.
It's an honor and privilege to serve as your representative in Washington. Lacrosse Grades Are In! Town Academy Earns Straight A's

Over 1,200 youngsters (ages 7 to 15) graduated with honors from last year's Town of Hempstead Lacrosse Academy. With a championship calibre faculty, comprised of respected high school coaches and outstanding college players, the academy offers expert instruction on lacrosse fundamentals and strategies. "Our young lacrosse students will improve their skill level and increase their enjoyment by working together with staff members and other players," commented Supervisor Kate Murray.
The academy's "goal" for 2010 is to offer youngsters a great summer of lacrosse instruction. Weekly clinics begin on Monday, June 21 and continue through August 5th. Clinics run from Monday to Thursday each week. This year the lacrosse academy will present seven weekly clinics and the number of evening sessions has been increased as a convenience to parents and a concession to hot summer days.
Clinics are open to Town of Hempstead youngsters ONLY, with a registration fee of $60 per student and a discount rate of $45 for additional family members. All payments must be made in the form of check or money order payable to the Town of Hempstead.
If openings remain, registrations will be accepted at the scheduled park prior to the first session of each clinic. The 2010 Lacrosse Academy registration application can be accessed from the town's web site at www.toh.li/content/rc/athletics/lacrosse.html. For additional information on the town's lacrosse program call the Academy Office at (516) 783-3208 or (516) 783-3205.

Entering its 35th year, the Town of Hempstead's Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program is poised to provide free income tax preparation services for senior residents. Hempstead Town Supervisor Kate Murray has announced the upcoming schedule of dates and locations for the VITA Program. VITA volunteers have received training, sponsored by Hempstead Town's Department of Senior Enrichment under the auspices of the Internal Revenue Service, and will be assigned to locations throughout Hempstead Town during the tax season.
"Our outstanding group of VITA volunteers is prepared to provide invaluable aid to seniors throughout the tax season at various town senior centers and local libraries," said Supervisor Murray. "For the past 34 years, this free service has helped senior residents prepare their federal and state income tax returns and secure every penny of the refunds to which they are entitled."
"Through innovative programs such as VITA, Hempstead Town continues to offer senior residents excellent services," stated Councilman Edward Ambrosino. "I encourage all senior residents interested in having their federal and state tax returns prepared by a VITA volunteer to contact our Department of Senior Enrichment for VITA site information."
Participants must bring last year's tax return (2008), all wage and earning statements (W2 and 1099), all interest dividend and pension statements, 2009 property tax receipts, STAR exemption records, New York State IT 214 booklet (if applicable), social security cards and photo identification of all those filing tax returns. Most VITA sites require that an appointment be made in advance.
"Our outstanding VITA volunteers are ready to help you obtain the maximum allowable refund, so please make an appointment and take advantage of this free service," concluded Supervisor Murray.

Elmont Fire Department Haiti Relief Comedy Show
The Elmont Fire Department is hosting a “Haiti Relief” comedy show on Saturday Night February 27th 2010. The show will be hosted by the comedian Chris Monty. The show will be at Elmont Fire Dept. Headquarters located at 95 Lehrer Ave. Elmont. $40 dollars a person for dinner, show, and beer, wine, and soda. Doors open at 6:30 and the show starts at 8:00 P.M.

Project 21
Every month the 5th Precinct Pop Unit goes out into the Community and visits stores who sell alcohol and tobacco. This program named "Project 21" monitors the sale of alcoholic beverages and tobacco to minors. Last night, January 26, two arrests were made, one in West Hempstead and the other Elmont.
